Washington’s drug treatment admission rates closely reflect that of the nation. In 2013, about 0.51 percent of Washington’s population sought treatment for a variety of substance addiction. This accounted for almost 35,000 Washingtonians, more than 65 percent of whom sought treatment for their illicit drug and controlled substance addiction. Marijuana addiction continue to dominate the addiction treatment admission landscape of Washington accounting for a quarter of all admissions. Treatment admissions for heroin were at 15 percent while methamphetamine followed closely at 13 percent. Only 8 out of 100 treatment admissions were attributed to prescription opioid painkiller addictions.
The drug overdose mortality rates in Washington are moderate at best. At 13.3 per 100,000 in 2014, Washington’s mortality rates associated with drug overdose was relatively better compared to other states in the country. The state registered 979 deaths related to drug overdose in 2014 which was 10 deaths higher than its 2013 figures at 969. However the age adjusted mortality rate for drug overdose for 2013 was 1 notch higher than 2014 at 13.4.
Washington’s health professionals and state officials are working ever so closely, hand in hand, to help stop the rising occurrence of drug overdose deaths. Everyone is counting on information dissemination campaigns that include widespread information, education, and communications action programs. These are intended to spread the correct information about the use of prescription opioid painkillers as well as its harmful and often deadly effects. Additionally,
Washington’s drug rehab and treatment facilities are also enhancing their treatment protocols in consonance with local and state mandated policies and measures. Together with state officials, drug rehab centers can create more effective and safer drug addiction treatment regimens. Currently, the medical management of the many physiologic changes that occur with addiction are carefully integrated with cognitive and behavioral therapies. This approach should be able to provide the individual with a more effective means of getting through the painful withdrawal stage of the treatment process in a certain drug addiction center. What should be noted is that these medications do have the tendency to be abused by patients especially when they are no longer medically supervised. This is clearly what happened with methadone in the past and is now one of the most often abused type of prescription opioid painkiller.
The value of cognitive and behavioral therapies in drug rehabilitation efforts is taken by most healthcare practitioners to be single most important deciding factor on whether the person will go into remission or not. Drug remissions complicate the drug landscape as individuals who are already supposed to be cured somehow manages to get back on the drug track again. Behavioral experts and cognitive psychologists are working with other members of the healthcare team in order to provide a more realistic and truly responsive program of treatment and rehabilitation for the state’s drug dependents.
It remains to be seen whether this will have an effect or not. Nonetheless, Washington’s drug rehab centers can only keep up with the changing times and hope that they will be able to help more drug dependents and addicts in the state.
