The nation’s capital has shown a more favorable drug treatment admission data compared to most states in the nation. With close to 700,000 residents in the nation’s capital, only 0.9 percent chose to seek drug addiction treatment and rehabilitation. What is interesting to note is that of the close to 65 percent of all treatment admissions due to illicit drug abuse, the number of people who were admitted due to the misuse of prescription opioid analgesics were almost negligible, almost non-existent. However, Washington District of Columbia’s major problem is cocaine which accounted for more than 20 percent of all treatment admissions. This was closely followed by heroin at 19.5 percent, marijuana at 15 percent, and PCP at 9 percent.
Washington D.C. posted 102 deaths which were attributed to drug overdose in 2013. This figure accounted for a drug overdose mortality rate of 15.0. The figure significantly improved the following year, posting 96 deaths for a 0.8 improvement in the drug overdose mortality rate for 14.2.
The drug rehabilitation facilities of the nation’s capital have to think of better ways on how to encourage greater participation in its treatment programs. While an addiction center in Washington D.C. can expect to admit more patients compared to other states in the country, it still is less than 1 percent of its total population. Nonetheless, the favorable figures in addiction treatment admissions has been the taken as a major incentive for addiction center establishments in the D.C. area to up the tempo of their treatment services so that more patients can be served. Internet marketing strategies coupled with traditional offline marketing campaigns have all been directed towards the improvement of treatment admissions. Many Washington D.C. drug rehab centers are very optimistic that they can further improve on the data.
Of particular importance for many of the rehabilitation workers of Washington D.C. is the increasing number of young people who actively seek drug treatment. It is important to note that more than 65 percent of all addiction treatment admissions were due to illicit drug abuse. Knowing that more young people are seeking treatment is a cause for optimism among drug rehab facilities in the D.C. area. They know that somehow their marketing strategies are effective and are generating the kind of treatment admissions that they require, especially from the younger population.
Washington D.C. is now more focused on getting the older members of the population to seek drug addiction treatment as well. While education worked in encouraging the youth to seek treatment, educating the adult population may require some form of tweaking the content of information dissemination campaign materials. Adults are more practical. If they don’t see the effects of such programs on their lives, it will be meaningless for them.
It is for this reason that Washington D.C.’s drug rehabilitation centers are increasing their collaboration with faith-based and community-based support groups. Leaders and drug rehab experts hope that these community resources will be able to encourage adult members of the population to seek treatment as well.
